Christine Bacal is chemistry researcher with eight years of research experience across a wide range of areas, including materials engineering, surface science, biochemistry, and molecular biology. She completed her Master of Chemistry at the University of the Philippines, for work on isolating a novel fungal species from locally sourced mangroves to obtain enzymes for potential applications in degrading lignocellulosic waste.
She obtained her PhD at Deakin University, working on a jointly-funded project at the Institute for Frontier Materials and the Deakin School of Medicine. She fabricated a biocompatible and highly selective haemodialysis filtration membrane for paracetamol capture in overdosed patients.
She joined the Hearing Therapeutics group at Ear Science Institute Australia in 2023 as a Research Associate , working with Dr. Filippo Valente on the continued development of the ClearDrum® medical device.
