World-leading research at the Ear Science Institute Australia has been examining the link.
Through brain scans of patients suffering from dementia, we have been able to determine that hearing loss could speed up the rate of atrophy in the brain, consequently worsening the symptoms of dementia, not to mention the social isolation that can occur following these symptoms.
“You should be concerned if you are struggling to hear in noisy places,” Dr Dona Jayakody told 3AW Drive.
“Hearing loss is the No.1 risk factor for dementia.”
