Ear Science researchers from the Basic Research team hosted two students for The University of Western Australia’s annual Winter School Program.
Established in 2010, the Winter School Program aims to boost educational programs and research capacity, as well as enhance collaborations between UWA and universities in China. Students undertake a week of specialised lectures and workshops, before commencing their specific placements.
Postgraduate students Shi Hui and Shentu Daiyuan from Wenzhou Medical University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University respectively, worked with researchers at Ear Science on a short research project focused on the inner ear.
This program gave the students insight into PhD studies, including how to plan and undertake research, presenting at a seminar, scientific writing, understanding the importance of medical research and learning about their field from a new angle. They can then take these skills back and enhance the research undertaken at their home universities.
After their two-week placement, Shi Hui and Shentu Daiyuan presented their findings at a Winter School Program student seminar held in the McCusker Auditorium at the Harry Perkins Institute, as well as to the research team at Ear Science.
The research findings undertaken by the students will be used as a foundation for a longer-term research project at Ear Science.
A big thank you to honours student Minami Uemoto, who took on the informal role of tutor for the students while on their placements. Fellow researchers Lawrence Liew, Sharon Redmond, Dr
Abbie Francis and Dr Elaine Wong provided valuable contributions to the students’ learning, and the team as a whole each helped in a variety of ways.
